Memshare - Regna
Silent in his hurt and resignation, Roland swallows thickly, then bows and takes his leave with taut shoulders. Upon exiting the throne room, he steels himself for the familiar whispers of the nobles who sneer his way.
"The young prince would much rather frolic around the kingdom and hunt like a common boy than mind his station. So uncouth—a far cry from the king and the crown prince. But what can we expect from the youngest prince with no aptitude for governance?"
Their barbs burrow deep into Roland's heart. Still, he stalks the castle hall with his fists at his sides when he comes face to face with his brother. Unlike the nobles who titter and mock, Frani is ever cross with an expression that borders on contemptuous.
"Must you harangue Father so? You know he has more important duties than to indulge your ignorance." He folds his arms across his chest. "You are no longer a child, yet you persist in this behavior. When will you stop embarrassing our family and start living up to the royal signet on your hand?"
The rest is a blur as the two of them descend into a hateful argument about Roland's inadequacies—his disinterest in politics and inability to show when asked for (punctuated by bitterness from Roland as if to say, What difference does my presence make?), as well as his enduring ignorance on matters pertaining to the state. Where Roland is heated and emotional, Frani is cool and critical. In the end, Roland grits his teeth against the indifferent order to be present when the envoys from across Norzelia arrive, and he flees the castle in a haze of anger, hurt, and yearning.
