Memshare - Hughette 1
His movements are trained, swift, and decisive, cowing the bandit after a single thrust of his spear.
The young woman thanks him profusely, but Roland, as conveyed through the strange link between memory and audience, feels that he hasn't done anything extraordinary. After all, it is the duty of a member of the royal family to guard his subjects. He's simply pleased that she's safe, and happy that she has such a faithful companion to watch after her. He bids her adieu, then resumes his hunt with a little more spring in his step, satisfied with the outcome.
Memshare - Merchants
Unable to bear witness to their squabble any longer, Roland all but rushes into the scene. Predictably, the resolution has nothing to do with his wisdom and everything to do with his title. While he takes issue with this, he's happy that the petty dispute is settled and that his subject is now free to continue his business undisturbed. Hopefully, the itinerant merchant will be able to peddle his wares in some days' time as well.
The shopkeep insists that he come by for a gift, but Roland raises his hands and shakes his head. After all, he hardly did a thing.
Memshare - Hughette 2
His emotions take a wistful turn as he imagines himself in their shoes. He's grown accustomed to roaming the land on his own. What would it be like to soar through the skies with a true friend? A friend comes to mind, and there's admiration as Roland holds him in the highest regard, but that hope is summarily dashed by the fact that they seldom see each other.
Loneliness creeps in, snaking its way around his heart. Roland's days are often spent alone, if not in the company of those who disparage his worthless existence. Yet his heart swells against reality. To leave all that behind and see the world from the eyes of a bird, seated beside a trusted companion—how breathtaking would that be?
Memshare - Regna
Silent in his hurt and resignation, Roland swallows thickly, then bows and takes his leave with taut shoulders. Upon exiting the throne room, he steels himself for the familiar whispers of the nobles who sneer his way.
"The young prince would much rather frolic around the kingdom and hunt like a common boy than mind his station. So uncouth—a far cry from the king and the crown prince. But what can we expect from the youngest prince with no aptitude for governance?"
Their barbs burrow deep into Roland's heart. Still, he stalks the castle hall with his fists at his sides when he comes face to face with his brother. Unlike the nobles who titter and mock, Frani is ever cross with an expression that borders on contemptuous.
"Must you harangue Father so? You know he has more important duties than to indulge your ignorance." He folds his arms across his chest. "You are no longer a child, yet you persist in this behavior. When will you stop embarrassing our family and start living up to the royal signet on your hand?"
The rest is a blur as the two of them descend into a hateful argument about Roland's inadequacies—his disinterest in politics and inability to show when asked for (punctuated by bitterness from Roland as if to say, What difference does my presence make?), as well as his enduring ignorance on matters pertaining to the state. Where Roland is heated and emotional, Frani is cool and critical. In the end, Roland grits his teeth against the indifferent order to be present when the envoys from across Norzelia arrive, and he flees the castle in a haze of anger, hurt, and yearning.
Memshare - Cordelia
Roland is a child when his mother passes—young, but old enough to grasp that she'll not be returning amid the blur of servants and aristocrats who mourn her as is customary. While he finds himself already longing for her embrace, he turns his attention to the smaller child beside him, her small hand in his. Cordelia, his beloved sister, has no idea what she's just lost. He bends down to pick her up, feeling her weight in his arms, and his expression tightens in resolve.
Growing up, he makes sure that she never eats alone, even if it's just Roland at the table. Once her hair grows a certain length, he gathers it in his hands and weaves it into a braid and teaches her, and smiles proudly when she does her own braid for the first time. He walks her through the gardens with a crown of flowers he helped her put together, her hand in his again, and plucks strange bugs out of her hair before she can notice. When she's down and burdened, he holds her close and listens to her troubles about wishing to see their father more until she's comforted, all while hiding his own troubled expressions.
Then, when they're both older, he laughs boisterously while she giggles at the wreath of flowers on his head.
"Brother, those flowers have a strong fragrance."
"Do they now? Then shall I enter the castle like this?"
Because it puts a smile on her face, he does just that, scandalized whispers of the nobles be damned.
