Roland stands in the clearing of a forest, where he watches a hawk fly overhead before it glides to an eventual landing nearby. A young woman dismounts while he approaches from the side, and to her he expresses his admiration for the bond she and her companion share. In turn, Hughette's answer is sweet and insistent as she rests a hand on Flugie.

His emotions take a wistful turn as he imagines himself in their shoes. He's grown accustomed to roaming the land on his own. What would it be like to soar through the skies with a true friend? A friend comes to mind, and there's admiration as Roland holds him in the highest regard, but that hope is summarily dashed by the fact that they seldom see each other.

Loneliness creeps in, snaking its way around his heart. Roland's days are often spent alone, if not in the company of those who disparage his worthless existence. Yet his heart swells against reality. To leave all that behind and see the world from the eyes of a bird, seated beside a trusted companion—how breathtaking would that be?
